Car in forest carpark prompts search

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 3/06/2016

Police have concerns for a Canadian man who has not been seen since he left a car near an entrance to Rimutaka Forest Park, north of Wellington.

Timo Aason, 48, left a red Suzuki Swift at Cross Creek Rd, close to the entrance to the Rimutaka Incline track. A local farmer noticed the car on Monday and reported it to police on Thursday.

On Friday, search and rescue staff have been looking in an area near to where the car was found.

The search is ongoing but it'll be scaled down overnight unless further information is received, police say.

Police believe Mr Aason entered the Rimutaka Forest Park via Cross Creek and the Rimutaka Incline track and they're asking if any trampers have seen him.

They are concerned for his safety because the weather has been very cold.

Mr Aason is originally from Canada and efforts are being made to contact his family there.
