A car has veered off the road, through a fence and come to rest upside down on railway tracks in Lower Hutt on Saturday night.

Police were called to the accident near Oxford Terrace, on the eastern side of Waterloo train station, just after 11pm.

The car left the road, travelled through a car park, crashed through a wire fence, flipped and wound up on its roof on the train tracks.

The driver was treated for minor injuries at the scene and was not taken to hospital.

The cause of the crash was not known, but NZ Newswire understands alcohol may have been a factor.

All train services between Petone and Taita were suspended until after 1am onSunday, when the car was taken away by a tow truck.
