A car discovered submerged in Nelson harbour has been recovered from the water.

Police says items found by the dive squad in their search earlier on Tuesday indicated that the vehicle belonged to Leo Lipp-Neighbours, who went missing seven years ago.

Inspector Mat Arnold-Kelly says officers are working closely with Mr Lipp-Neighbours' family and keeping them informed.

Police will examine the vehicle on Wednesday and continue to make further inquiries.

Commercial divers located the car at Wakefield Quay on Monday afternoon.

Mr Lipp-Neighbours was last seen with his distinctive orange Toyota Corolla stationwagon in Nelson on January 24, 2010.

Police have previously said they believe the disappearance of the then 19-year-old was the result of foul play.
