Car yard fined over AA status claim

A south Auckland car dealer has been fined $105,000 for falsely claiming it could do AA appraisals and its cars had gone through the process.

Zodiac Motor Company, who sole director is Nezam Anwer, lost its AA credentials in 2014 (for not ensuring at least 70 per cent of its stock was appraised) but continued to claim it carried out the appraisals.

It used AA signs and didn't change its website and in March last year it took out 151 radio advertisements claiming "all cars are AA appraised".

The statements were reckless and a complete departure from the truth, Judge Christopher Field said when Zodiac was sentenced in Manukau District Court after admitting six fair trading charges.
