Cardrona and The Remarkables ski fields are likely to get good numbers as the winter ski season gets under way.

Just a few weeks shy of the school holidays, the two ski fields, near Queenstown, opened for business on Saturday.

Chilly conditions greeted the early skiers, with temperatures hovering around 0 degrees for the day.

Cardrona's new sightseeing "chondola" was opened with a powhiri at 8.30am Saturday, and the beginners' slopes and McDougall's run were both good to go.

The Remarkables' opening was celebrated with champagne at the base of Curvey Basin Express.

Mt Hutt opened on Friday and Coronet Peak is expected to open next weekend, ahead of other South Island ski fields.

In the North Island, meanwhile, Whakapapa opened last weekend with its beginners' area, Happy Valley, a month ahead of schedule.

Whakapapa and Turoa's ski areas are due to officially open on July 1.
