Care worker pay equity deal is in force

More than 55,000 community care workers are in for pay rises of up to 50 per cent on Saturday when their $2 billion settlement kicks in.

Other July 1 changes include:

* Motorists get a 12.5 per cent reduction in annual ACC levies. The average levy will reduce from $130 to $114 per vehicle

* The Paid Parental Leave rate increases from $527 to $538 a week.

* Trained and authorised Corrections officers are allowed to carry pepper spray

* The first of 880 extra police officers start training with the first graduates on the beat by October

* Extra support for veterans and their families, including increasing lump-sum payments for those suffering a service-related permanent impairment

* The new Elder Abuse Response Service (EARS) comes in to effect - a free and confidential 24/7 expert advice and help-line, 0800 32 668 65 (EA NOT OK).
