Carpenter exits world boxing championships

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 21/05/2016

Whangarei boxer Deanne Carpenter has suffered an agonising loss in the second round of the women's world championships in Kazakhstan, leaving two New Zealanders still in contention.

Carpenter received a bye to advance through the first round of the women's 75kg middleweight class before losing by a 2-1 majority to Argentina's Lucia Perez.

One judge awarded the fight to Carpenter and another to Perez, leaving the third - Egyptian Nagy Osman - to make a ruling after he scored the fight 38-38. He awarded victory to the South American.

London Olympian Alexis Pritchard won her first fight on Thursday to advance to the second round of the 60kg class while Sunita Lallu is yet to fight in the 45-48kg class.

Pritchard needs a top-five finish in Astana to qualify for the Rio Olympics in August while Lallu must reach the final of her division.
