Rio Olympian Hamish Carson has pounced in the home straight to secure his third national 3000m championship title.

Carson played a waiting game before powering past Napier's Eric Speakman in the feature race at the Capital Classic in Wellington.

Speakman was less than half a second behind Carson's winning time of 8min 05.25sec, with 19-year-old Aucklander Daniel Hoy third.

Napier's Laura Nagel won the women's race in similar fashion, heading off national half marathon champion Olivia Burne on the final lap to win in 9:22.73.

It was 26-year-old Nagel's third national title in six months, having clinched the cross country and 10km road crowns.

The biggest surprise of the meet was a rare domestic defeat for Olympian Angie Petty over 800m.

Petty was run down in the home straight by Katherine Camp, who won in 2:06.03.
