Catalans Dragons are hoping the appointment of former New Zealand international Alex Chan to a key-off field role can help improve their fortunes on it.

Chan, 41, a member of the Dragons team who reached the 2007 Challenge Cup final at Wembley and made 78 Super League appearances for them from 2006-08, is returning to the Perpignan club as their general manager.

The former Parramatta and Melbourne forward, who is currently head coach of the Cook Islands, will take up a three-year contract on November 1 and is being charged with improving discipline off the field.

Catalans chairman Bernard Guasch was delighted to appoint Chan, who played his three Kiwis Tests a decade ago.

"He has always been a role model as a player, he has always been a great example for everybody at the club," Guasch said.
