Singapore's Changi Airport is on track to host a record 60 million passengers this year, thanks to double-digit growth in passengers from some Asian countries.

Singapore's Changi Airport has welcomed its one billionth passenger and is on track to host a record 60 million passengers this year.

The airport passed the one-billion-passengers milestone in April, Changi Airport Group said in a news release on Monday. The airport handled more than five million passengers that month, a 7.8 per cent increase over the prior April.

Double-digit growth in markets including India, Indonesia and Malaysia helped to boost April's passenger traffic, the group said.

Changi's operations are set to expand, with a new Terminal 4 scheduled to open in the second half of this year.

A new Terminal 5 is slated for a 2020 opening, enabling the airport to handle 135 million passengers annually.

The airport opened in 1981.
