Three men are facing careless driving after separate crashes in Taupo and a fatal accident on the Desert Road earlier this year, police say.

A 22-year-old Aucklander has been charged with careless driving causing death after a crash on January 7 killed Nick Calavrias while he was cycling on the Desert Road.

Mr Calavrias, 67, was a Wellington businessman who was the former chief executive of Steel & Tube, an officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to business and was known for his workplace health and safety vigilance.

Meanwhile, a 29-year-old German man is facing three counts of careless driving causing injury after a head on collision in Turangi earlier this month.

Both men will be appearing in Taupo District Court next month.

A 70-year-old Australian man also faces five charges of careless driving causing injury after a crash on the Desert Road earlier this month.

He's due to appear in the Rotorua District Court later in April.
