A man faces a serious charge after a hit-and-run outside a pub in Whanganui during a brawl.

A BMW fled after hitting a 24-year-old man outside the Red Lion Inn on Anzac Parade at about 2am on Saturday, police said.

The victim was flown to Whanganui Hospital with serious head injuries and was then transferred to Wellington Hospital, where he remains in serious condition.

A 61-year-old man was arrested shortly after and on Sunday police said he had been charged with wounding with intent to cause GBH and driving while unlicensed and prohibited.

He is expected to appear in Whanganui District Court next week.

Officers were called to the pub where about a dozen people were fighting, but it was not yet clear whether the brawl and the crash were related.
