Mad Max: Fury Road star Charlize Theron is ready to rev up those engines once again in the eighth instalment of the Fast and Furious series.

Theron, who also showed off her car skills in The Italian Job, will join stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson and Michelle Rodriguez in Fast 8, Universal Pictures announced on social media.

The film is set for release in April 2017 with Straight Outta Compton director F Gary Gray at the helm.

The announcement teased that Theron's character will be the "crew's greatest adversary ever", although no plot has been officially announced.

The seven films in the Fast and Furious franchise have grossed around $US1.3 billion ($A1.73 billion) at the US box office and $US3.9 billion globally since the series was launched in 2001.
