Chase after wine raid comes to muddy end

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 15/04/2016

A group of young people has allegedly led police on a chase through Auckland during which the fugitives threw wine bottles at officers before their muddy capture in mangroves.

Police were called to a smashed Takapuna liquor store window after 2am on Saturday to find five people aged between 12 and 15 fleeing in a car.

During the chase that followed, the five led police across the harbour bridge and through Ponsonby, at times throwing bottles of wine at pursuing officers.

After hitting road spikes in Carrington Road, the group ditched the car and fled into nearby mangroves in Waitemata Harbour.

A police helicopter and the Maritime Unit were called in and the five were found covered in mud about 45 minutes later.

The oldest of the five was to appear in the Youth Court on Saturday, while the other four have been referred to Youth Aid.
