NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 28/07/2016

Freedom campers could soon be banned from Christchurch unless they have a toilet in their vehicle.

Christchurch City Council has voted to push ahead with a proposal allowing only self-contained freedom camping in the district.

It will consult the public over the issue from August 15 to September 15.

The council is also planning to prohibit all freedom camping in the five areas that were temporarily closed to the activity because of community concerns.

Those areas are Addington Park, Windsport Park, Lower Styx River Mouth, French Farm and Wainui.

Mayor Lianne Dalziel has called for a nationwide approach to the issue of freedom campers so there is one set of rules for tourists coming to New Zealand.
