Chemical spill in South Island town

Residents in the South Island town of Motueka are being warned to stay inside and keep windows closed after a highly toxic chemical leaked from a truck onto a main street.

Emergency services were at the scene of the spill on the corner of High and Tudor Streets at noon on Wednesday, while contractors were on the way to clean up the site.

Police say the the chemical, hydrogen cyanamide - or Hi-Cane - leaked from a barrel on the back of a truck.

The agriculture chemical can cause severe irritation of skin, eyes and throats.
