The Chiefs are keen to unleash Sam Cane against the Hurricanes in Hamilton on Friday after their star player missed the first two weeks of Super Rugby with an ankle injury.

The All Blacks loose forward has been in recovery mode since he was injured against Ireland in Dublin last November.

Mitchell Karpik and Lachlan Boshier have played at open side for the Chiefs in wins over the Highlanders and Blues, but one will have to be dropped to make way for Cane.

Coach Dave Rennie said the Chiefs were lucky with the depth they had at No.7.

"I know there were some question marks about why we started Lachie last week and everybody got to see why in the end - I thought he was fantastic.

"In all likelihood we will start Sam and one of those guys will back up" he said.

However Rennie is promising Karpik and Boshier will get more opportunities to impress during the Super Rugby competition.

"We don't need to start Sam every week and it's given us a lot of confidence in the depth we have in that position. She's a long season and we want to manage them well," he said.

The Chiefs have also recruited one of the franchise's favourite players with one-Test All Black Lelia Masaga back training with the squad.

Masaga played 91 games over seven seasons for the club, scoring 38 tries before heading to Japan in 2013.

"Lelia's a good man so he could well feature (later in the campaign) if we get some injuries" Rennie said.
