Child safety changes challenge YMCA NSW

YMCA NSW has faced challenges to remain solvent since significant reforms were made after failures at the organisation were found to have contributed to ongoing child sexual abuse, a royal commission has heard.

A hearing is investigating how YMCA NSW has addressed findings about its dealings with Jonathan Lord, who was hired as a casual after-school carer at Caringbah without the correct checks and whose abuse went unreported for two years.

In her opening to the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse on Monday, counsel assisting Gail Furness SC said changes had been made to senior management, training provided to staff and a confidential reporting system added.
