Young people and natural resources are on the agenda for the first Iwi Chairs Forum of the year in Waitangi.

Despite trading traditional commemorations at Te Tii Marae for Waitangi Day festivities in Auckland because of a dispute around speaking rights, Prime Minister Bill English is set to attend Friday's forum.

More than 60 iwi leaders are expected to come together for the first of the four-a-year events of 2017.

Mr English says while making arrangements around Waitangi Day had been "challenging" he expects the forum to run a smoothly as in the past.

"It'll be well organised, well focused and pretty demanding of us and them and we'll come out of it having achieved something and that's the kind of approach we can work with," he said.

Senior ministers are expected to join Mr English at the forum.

The full agenda for the meeting isn't known, but Ngai Tahu leaders are expected to raise the Children, Young Person and Their Families Bill.

Natural resources are also expected to be discussed.
