The Red Hot Chili Peppers have been forced to pull out of the iHeart Radio concert in California after lead singer Anthony Kiedis was admitted to hospital with intestinal flu.

The band was unable to perform at KROQ-FM's Weenie Roast concert at Orange County's Irvine Meadows at the weekend because Kiedis became ill.

Bassist Flea told the crowd on Saturday night that the Chili Peppers would be unable to perform because Kiedis was on his way to a hospital for medical reasons, but he did not elaborate.

Peppers drummer Chad Smith tweeted: "No one's more disappointed than us that we couldn't perform tonight. Sending love and a speedy recovery to my brother Anthony."

Kiedis was taken to the hospital after experiencing "complications from the intestinal flu," band spokesman Brian Bumbery said in a statement on Sunday.

As a result, the Chili Peppers have postponed a concert for iHeart Radio scheduled for Tuesday in Burbank, California, Bumbery said.

"They would like to extend their gratitude to the fans for the outpouring of well wishes," he said.

Kiedis, 53, is expected to make a full recovery.

The band's latest album, The Getaway, is set for release on June 16.
