China crush Tall Ferns for second time

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 20/05/2016

The Tall Ferns have suffered their second heavy loss to hosts China in the space of a week, going down 90-52 in the opening round of a Four Nations tournament in Xilinhot.

New Zealand lost the opening game of a tournament in Henyang 82-24 last week to the world's eighth-ranked side and at least improved the deficit on Thursday.

They were without the services of key guard Toni Edmondson, who was rested after carrying a heavy workload in the three games in Henyang.

The Tall Ferns trailed just 23-16 after the first quarter but dried up offensively to trail 43-24 at halftime.

Thirty turnovers proved costly for New Zealand, whose scoring was led by 14 to Kalani Purcell while Townsville Fire pair Micaela Cocks and Chevannah Paalvast scored eight each.

New Zealand's remaining games are against Montenegro, who they lost to 71-61 last week. The final game is against fifth-ranked Czech Republic, who they stunned 72-64 in Henyang.

The Tall Ferns are preparing for the Olympic qualifying tournament in France in June.
