Two people have walked away uninjured after a helicopter had to make an emergency landing in the South Island after losing power.

Emergency services were alerted to a distress beacon on the chopper at Graft Creek near Arthur's Pass at about 8.30am on Saturday.

A police spokeswoman said the helicopter had lost power mid-flight but the pilot had managed to set it down.

Both occupants had since been picked up by another chopper, she said.
