Eric Clapton has sold one of his guitars to help his friend musician Johnny Nicholas pay medical bills from his late wife's leukaemia treatment.

British guitar maestro Eric Clapton has auctioned off one of his guitars for $US45,000 ($A60,250) to help a fellow musician pay off medical bills, an auction house reports.

The guitar fetched more than twice what it was expected to raise in the weekend auction in Dallas, Heritage Auctions said on Monday.

The Fender Stratocaster was made in 2014 specifically for Clapton who used it in concerts that year. The winning bidder requested anonymity, Heritage said.

All the proceeds will go to Clapton's friend Johnny Nicholas from the band Asleep at the Wheel to help pay outstanding medical bills from his late wife's leukaemia treatment.
