A climber has been rescued from the inland Kaikoura Range on South Island.

An emergency locator beacon was set off on Tapuae-o-Uenuku at about 3pm on Saturday, the operator of the Nelson Marlborough rescue helicopter says.

An experienced climber, who was part of a group of six people, had fractured his ankle while coming down the mountain.

He was winched on board the helicopter and flown to Wairau Hospital.

Tapuae-o-Uenuku, formerly Mount Tapuaenuku, rises above the valleys of the Clarence and Awatere rivers.
