Club skiers head home after blizzard

NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 31/07/2016

Skiers who stayed overnight in lodges in the Whakapapa ski area on Mt Ruapehu are being helped to get down the mountain road after a blizzard.

The blizzard struck the mountain where there are two ski areas, Whakapapa and Turoa, dumping another 25cm to 30cm of new snow overnight.

The ski areas are closed on Sunday.

A spokeswoman for the ski area operator said people who stayed at club lodges overnight on the Whakapapa field were being assisted to get down the mountain on Sunday.

The club members met at the base of the field and are able to use their cars but specialist mountain transport vehicles are acting as pilot vehicles.

Great skiing is predicted later in the week.
