Coastal Pacific train cancelled for season

Carriages used on the Coastal Pacific, cancelled for the rest of the season because of the Kaikoura earthquake, are being shifted to other services.

KiwiRail normally runs the daily return journey between Christchurch and Picton from late September to May.

However, head of scenic journeys Gavin Rutherford says the damage to the track near Kaikoura is extensive.

"We regret the impact this cancellation will have on the communities along the line, particularly Kaikoura and Marlborough, but the route is currently unusable and is expected to remain that way for some months," he said.

The Coastal Pacific's carriages will be moved to the TranzAlpine (Christchurch-Greymouth) and the Northern Explorer (Auckland-Wellington) services.

Mr Rutherford said KiwiRail would look to redeploy affected staff.
