A Brazilian woman who tried to smuggle more than $3 million worth of cocaine into New Zealand has been given an eight-year jail sentence.

Customs officers found 4.6 kilograms of the A-class drug in 29-year-old Evelin Stemposki's luggage when she arrived at Auckland Airport from Brazil in April.

She was sentenced at the Manukau District Court on Thursday afternoon, Customs said.

Customs investigations manager Bruce Berry said Stemposki had come up with an "elaborate" cover story about being a language teacher but x-rays revealed false bottoms in her luggage containing cocaine with a street value of $3.2 million.

"Transnational criminal syndicates recruit drug couriers through various means, and have no concern for their wellbeing," he said.
