Cold night for Fiordland travellers

NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 16/01/2017

Three overseas travellers have spent the night on a mountain range in the Fiordland National Park after conditions deteriorated during a day tramp.

The women alerted authorities at around 10pm when conditions in the Emily Pass area of the Ailsa Mountain Range made it impossible for them to leave.

A helicopter was sent to rescue them but low cloud and strong winds meant the group could not be reached.

"A helicopter dropped a LandSAR team of two personnel nearby, who then walked the cold trio to a sheltered area and stayed with them overnight," police said in a statement.

Conditions improved on Tuesday morning and rescuers were able to retrieve the group from the mountain range.
