Former All Blacks first five-eighth Colin Slade has effectively bid au revoir to any prospect of a return to Test rugby.

The 29-year-old announced he has extended his contract with French club Pau for a further three seasons, until 2020.

"I'm excited with the direction of the club and where this team could go," Slade said.

"I'm also enjoying the lifestyle here in France and looking forward to it continuing for the next three seasons here in Pau."

The last of Slade's 21 Tests was a pool game against Namibia at the 2015 World Cup.

His Test career spanned six years but his opportunities were limited by the presence of world class playmakers Dan Carter and Aaron Cruden.

Slade joined Pau after the World Cup and plays alongside several other New Zealanders - former All Blacks Conrad Smith, Tom Taylor and Jamie Mackintosh, along with uncapped forwards Chris King and Daniel Ramsay.
