New Zealander Paul Coll's latest deep foray into a major squash tournament has ended in the semi-finals.

Coll went down in four games to freshly promoted world No.1 Gregory Gaultier, failing to match the precision of the Frenchman at the El Gouna International Squash Open in Egypt.

World No.13 Coll was most impressive in the third game, seizing early control before Gaultier fought back and forced a match ball which Coll staved off.

However, the Greymouth 24-year-old couldn't prevent a player 10 years his senior from winning 11-6 11-6 11-13 11-6 in 72 minutes.

It leaves Gaultier in line to win a fourth successive PSA world series tournament. His opponent in the final is world No.5 Marwan El Shorbagy of Egypt.

It was another sterling week from Coll, who has soared up the world rankings over the last six months.

A highlight was his quarter-final win over former world No.1 and tournament fifth seed James Willstrop in straight games.
