New Zealander Paul Coll has been named the world's most-improved squash player of 2016 by a leading publication.

Squash Player magazine's annual awards acknowledged Coll's climb from outside the top-50 to 16th in the world rankings.

The 24-year-old from Greymouth rounded off the year by winning the Channel VAS Championship in England, the biggest title of his career.

The magazine said the athletic Coll was previously best known for some spectacular rallies which became popular on video website Youtube.

His game has developed in other areas, helping him become the highest-ranked Kiwi man since Ross Norman's retirement more than 20 years ago.
