New Zealand No.1 Paul Coll faces a mountainous task after reaching the semi-finals of the Cambridge Cup squash tournament in Canada.

Coll will play world No.2 Karim Abdel Gawad of Egypt for a place in the final after winning contrasting quarter-finals.

World 16th-ranked Coll dispatched 25th-ranked Cesar Salazar of Mexico 11-5 11-5 11-9 while it took Gawad four tight sets to beat Australian Cameron Pilley.

Coll's inclusion in the eight-player invitation tournament is another indication of his rapid ascension.

Last week, he was named the biggest improver in the men's game for 2016 by a respected squash magazine, having begun 2016 outside the world top 50.
