Cologne, one of Germany's major tourism destinations, saw a 3.5 per cent drop in overnight stays by visitors in 2016, industry officials reported.

Cologne, one of Germany's major tourism destinations, saw a 3.5 per cent drop in overnight stays by visitors in 2016, industry officials reported.

Possible contributing factors to the drop were the headline-making New Year's Eve sexual assaults and overall security worries, the Cologne Tourism Company said.

The figures showed a sharp fall in foreign visitors, including a 12.1 drop in visitors from Britain. Overnight stays by domestic travellers fell by 2.8 per cent.

In the wake of terrorist attacks in Europe, some travel operators had changed the itinerary of their European tours, thereby affecting Cologne, said Josef Sommer, head of the tourism company. For example, many visitors from China were now no longer landing in Paris or Dusseldorf, choosing Prague and Vienna.

"This means that Cologne as a stopping point along a travel route is no longer so often to be found on an itinerary," he said.
