The Crown and Auckland Council have signed agreements transferring the City Rail Link project to a specially created entity.

City Rail Link Ltd (CRLL) is a company, known as a Crown entity, owned by the Crown and Auckland Council and has its own board and executives. Sir Brian Roche is the chairman of the board.

The company is charged with efficiently managing the $3.4 billion project, which will build the country's first underground rail passenger facilities.

The 3.4 kilometre double-track underground rail line will run from Britomart station in downtown Auckland through the CBD to connect with the existing western line at Mt Eden station.

When complete City Rail Link will create two new underground stations, Aotea and Karangahape, and double both the number of trains on the Auckland network and the capacity of people on trains.

"This is an important project for Auckland. It will double the capacity of our rail network and ease congestion enabling 30,000 people an hour to move during peak travel times," Auckland Mayor Phil Goff said.

Auckland Transport and state-owned rail operator KiwiRail are engaged by CRLL to provide technical and operational support services.

"CRL is Auckland's top new transport priority," says Transport Minister Simon Bridges.
