Police say the missing brother and sister who left their caregiver in Tuakau may be heading to family in Auckland.

Seven-year-old Anahera McLean, wearing just a Frozen branded onesie, and her 15-year-old brother Te Morehu left their Tuakau address on Monday night with a suitcase.

There was no sign of them in the small north Waikato town and they may have been picked up.

The pair had left their caregiver of their own volition, Inspector Kay Lane told reporters on Tuesday.

It did not appear that an argument had sparked their disappearance but police were concerned for Anahera because of her age.

Police were now investigating the possibility they had headed to be with family members in the greater Auckland area.

The pair were close and Te Morehu was very protective of his sister, Insp Lane said.

Police are searching the wider Tuakau area and urging neighbouring property owners to check their outbuildings.

The police Eagle helicopter has also been searching for the pair. While Anahera was wearing the onesie, police say

Te Morehu was described as 170cm tall, of solid build and with short dark hair, was wearing Nike shoes, light brown pants and a Kathmandu puffer jacket.
