Concussed Nonu out of French club final

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 23/06/2016

Ma'a Nonu has been ruled out of French rugby's Top 14 final after being knocked out in Toulon's semi-final win last weekend.

His unavailability means he won't get to face fellow All Blacks centurion and World Cup-winning teammate Dan Carter, who will line up for Racing 92.

Having scored one of his side's two tries, Nonu was floored in a heavy collision with another ex-All Black, Anthony Tuitavake, during Toulon's 27-18 victory over Montpellier.

Toulon manager Bernard Laporte says the 34-year-old midfielder hasn't had enough time to recover under the concussion protocols and will be replaced by France international Mathieu Bastareaud.

Because the Stade de France in Paris is being used for the European soccer championship, the final on Saturday (NZT) will be at the Nou Camp, the home of Spanish soccer giants Barcelona.

With confirmation in March that all 98,000 tickets had been sold, the match is set to break the attendance record for a domestic club rugby fixture.

The present record is 84,068 for an English Premiership match between Saracens and Harlequins at Wembley last year.
