Cooper and Gaze vie for Rio spot

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 2/05/2016

Anton Cooper and Sam Gaze will resume their Olympic selection rivalry after being named in the New Zealand team to contest the cross-country mountain bike world championships.

Cooper returns to defend his crown in the men's under-23 race at Nove Mesto in the Czech Republic but will have half an eye on fellow-professional Gaze.

Both riders are duelling for one available spot for the Rio Games in August, with the June 29-July 3 world championships the last qualifying event.

Gaze won the New Zealand championships near Wanaka in March but Cooper struck back by winning the Oceania title a week later.

There are nine Kiwi riders named in age group categories while Kate Fluker and Samara Sheppard will contest the elite women's race.
