Three people have been taken into custody after a threat was made that sent a Palmerston North supermarket into lockdown.

Armed officers cordoned off the area around the New World supermarket on Main Street after a man allegedly made a threat against a customer on Thursday.

The man then fled to a nearby home on Church Street, which was also cordoned off for a period of time.

Police said both cordons have been lifted and three people were arrested by 3pm.

The nature of the threat is still being established, they said.
