Cordons have been lifted at Pakaraka in Northland but police are still seeking a man they have a warrant to arrest and who was in a car that failed to stop.

Police say they tried to stop the vehicle on Marsdens Road in Paihia shortly after 2.30pm on Wednesday when staff saw a known offender.

The car drove on, road spikes were laid, the vehicle crashed and the driver and a passenger fled on foot.

One, understood to be the passenger, was arrested about 3.50pm and is in custody.

The armed offenders squad and dog units were deployed to find the other person but police said on Wednesday night the OAS had been stood down.
