Coromandel road to get $278m upgrade

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 26/04/2016

A dangerous stretch of road in the Coromandel is getting an upgrade that's going to cost nearly $280 million.

Transport Minister Simon Bridges says there have been 18 serious crashes over the last five years on the 32km stretch of SH2 between Pokeno and the SH25 intersection.

It will be widened to three lanes, with two lanes for traffic heading west towards Auckland.

There will be a new roundabout and four interchanges separating state highway and local traffic.

"Improving safety on this popular holiday route is a key part of this project," Mr Bridges said on Wednesday.

"Over the last five years there have been 18 crashes resulting in 34 deaths and serious injuries."

Mr Bridges says most of the crashes were either head-on or vehicles running off the road, so median barriers and guard rails will also be installed.

The project will cost $278m and work is expected to start in 2017.
