Council for sentence over zookeeper death © AP Photo/Themba Hadebe Council for sentence over zookeeper death Almost a year after zookeeper Samantha Kudeweh was fatally mauled by a tiger, Hamilton City Council is about learn what penalty it will face over her death.

In June, the council pleaded guilty to one charge under the Health and Safety in Employment Act of failing to take all practicable steps to ensure the safety of Mrs Kudeweh while at work.

It was convicted and will be sentenced in Hamilton District Council on Tuesday, when it faces a possible maximum fine of $250,000.

Mrs Kudeweh, 43, was killed after being attacked by an adult male Sumatran tiger in an enclosure of the council-run Hamilton Zoo on September 20, 2015.

She had been a keeper for more than two decades and was a senior member of the zoo's team.
