A four-month Customs operation has resulted in a young Vietnamese couple appearing in Auckland District Court on Thursday on drug importation charges.

Between January and March this year, Customs allege a 23-year-old Vietnamese man and a 25-year-old Vietnamese woman living in an inner-city Auckland apartment received three packages of methamphetamine worth $11.6 million.

The drugs were hidden in a home drinking water system and within packaging of two consignments of alloy wheel trims.

The couple were arrested after Customs searched their apartment last Friday.

Customs officers found 900 grams of methamphetamine, 800 grams of cannabis, $13,000 cash, used zip-lock bags, an electronic scale, and a meth pipe

The couple face multiple charges and remain in custody, to reappear in court on May 2.
