Court appearance for fatal crash driver

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 22/05/2016

A man behind the wheel of a car involved in a police chase that resulted in the death of a female passenger is set to appear in court.

The 42-year-old Horowhenua man will appear in the Wellington District Court on Monday for charged with failing to stop as well as other charges unrelated to the car chase.

He was signalled to pull over by police in Porirua on Saturday night but failed to do so, and instead allegedly tried to flee.

Police chased his car for less than two minutes through the town before it lost control and crashed through a fence.

Both people in the car were taken to hospital but the passenger, a 21-year-old woman from Wellington, later died from her injuries.

Police are still trying to inform her family, some of whom are overseas.

The driver was seriously injured in the crash but police say he will be released into their custody on Monday morning before his court appearance.

The crash has been referred to the Independent Police Conduct Authority.
