A man is due to face court accused of hitting and killing teen skateboarder Jacob Pakura in Auckland and fleeing the scene.

Police arrested a 33-year-old west Auckland man on Tuesday night after a three-day public appeal for the driver in Saturday's crash to come forward.

The man is due to appear in Waitakere District Court on Wednesday, charged with dangerous driving causing death and failing to stop.

Police made the arrest based on information provided by a member of the public following extensive public pleas and searches of CCTV footage.

Pakura's family are relieved by the arrest and thanked officers who worked on the case and the public who phoned with information, police said.

On Monday about 50 family and friends gathered on Rua Road, where the crash happened late on Saturday night, and held a final blessing for the 16-year-old.

His mother Esther broke into tears, saying her son will be sorely missed.

"He loved living and he took every opportunity he got," she said.

"When this person hit Jacob and they left, they don't know what they have taken.

"They don't know what an awesome person he was."
