Coventry quits London Irish to head home

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 23/06/2016

London Irish head coach Tom Coventry is quitting the post to return to New Zealand.

Irish said Coventry had stepped down "by mutual agreement" to return home for family reasons.

The Exiles were relegated from the Premiership last season and they will play Championship rugby next term.

Coventry linked up with Irish in July last year, but the Premiership campaign saw them win just four games all season as they finished bottom, seven points behind 11th-placed Newcastle.

Irish chief executive Bob Casey said the decision was made after a review of the season.

"Given his family situation, our discussions with Tom have resulted in agreement that it is in his best interests to return to New Zealand."

In a statement released by Irish, Coventry said: "London Irish is in a good place to bounce immediately back into the top tier of English rugby.

"I wish the club all the best in their future direction and drive for Premiership status."

Coventry was an assistant coach at Super Rugby side the Chiefs before heading abroad.
