The covers remain on at Seddon Park as rain falls ahead of the first cricket ODI between New Zealand and South Africa in Hamilton on Sunday.

Forecast rain appeared to have arrived early, but New Zealand Cricket was optimistic it would clear in time for the scheduled 2pm start.

Seddon Park and Auckland's Eden Park were sharing equipment, NZC said in a statement, with two "whale" super-soppers in use to soak up excess moisture.

The Black Caps are looking for a winning start in the five-match limited overs series after they were thumped by 78 runs on Friday in a one-off Twenty20 fixture at Eden Park.
