Cowboys call on Morgan to back up strongly

North Queensland coach Paul Green is seeking a big post-Origin game from Michael Morgan after confirming centre Justin O'Neill will miss Saturday's NRL clash with Gold Coast.

O'Neill failed a concussion test following a heavy and controversial tackle by NSW opponent Jarryd Hayne late in Wednesday night's State of Origin opener at Suncorp Stadium and did not return to the field.

With Cowboys skipper Jonathan Thurston still sidelined by his shoulder injury, Green on Friday called on fellow playmaker Morgan to put aside his Origin bumps, fatigue and disappointment to steer his team against the Titans.

Queensland bench utility Michael Morgan played a larger role than expected in the Maroons 28-4 loss in Origin I.

"Part of his development is working on backing up after playing big minutes. Last year he missed a couple of games after Origin so we thought it could be something to work on," Green said.

"A lot of those really good representative players take pride in their ability to back up and do your job for your club team.

"I know he's keen to get out there Saturday night to get rid of that losing feeling, so hopefully he can take out some of his frustrations out."
