One person has died after a truck and trailer unit crashed over a bank south of Tauranga.

The 63-year-old Rotorua man was the driver.

The crash happened about 1.30pm on Monday on Tauranga Direct Road, which is part of State Highway 36, between Pyes Pa Road and Te Matai Road.

Police say the highway is expected to be closed overnight. Because the truck and trailer unit was carrying hazardous substances, a 250m exclusion zone has been set up around the crash site.

Environmental Protection Agency officials from Bay of Plenty District Council are at the scene.

Diversions are in place at the north end of Pyes Pa Road near Te Matai Road and at the south end of Pyes Pa Road near Dudley Road.
