English League Two club Crewe Alexandra have confirmed their director of football, Dario Gradi, has been suspended from football.

Dario Gradi, the director of Crewe Alexandra and their former manager, has been suspended pending an FA investigation into historic sexual abuse in English football.

Gradi was manager at Crewe - one of the clubs at the centre of allegations of abuse - from 1983 to 2007.

"Following discussions with the Football Association, Crewe Alexandra Football Club can confirm that Dario Gradi is currently under an FA interim suspension from football," the League Two side said in a statement on their website.

Crewe has already opened an investigation into how it dealt with historic sexual abuse allegations after their former youth team coach Barry Bennell was named as an abuser by several former players.

Gradi was Crewe manager at the time as Bennell, who has served three jail sentences for child sex offences, was alleged to have carried out the abuse.

Gradi's suspension is also linked to accusations he "smoothed over" a complaint of sexual abuse when he was the assistant manager at Chelsea in the 1970s, the BBC said.
