Crown Range Road in Otago closed

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 22/05/2016

A number of vehicles are stuck in snow on Crown Range Road in Otago.

Police say they're closing the road due to weather conditions.

No one is injured, police say.

The Crown Range lies to the east of the Wakatipu Basin and is a popular tourist route.

"Too many ignoring the signs and trying to get over without chains," Queenstown Lakes District Council says in a tweet notifying of the road closure on Sunday afternoon.

It advises motorists to take State Highway 6 via Cromwell instead.

The MetService warned that a cold southerly was likely to bring snow to some of the higher passes and hill country farms in Southland and eastern Otago on Sunday.

Warnings are also in place for snow in most of the mountain passes in the South Island.
